New wrist watches from Casio India
Casio India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japanese major which currently derives the majority of its Rs 40 crore revenues from selling calculators in India, is now investing in a major way to establish its position in the wrist watch and digital camera segments.
Worldwide the market for digital cameras is growing rapidly.Casio India recently launched three new camera models under the Exilim series, which are priced as Rs. 17000/- onwards.
Casio India also plans to add close to 100 models of watches to boost its existing range of about 800 models.
The new range will include the G-Shock Cockpit collection, Sports Gear and Active Dial.
Company will invest around Rs 2 crore this year to promote its range of products. While part of the funds will be infused by Casio India, the rest will come from the parent company Casio Tokyo.
The maximum contribution comes from calculators. Even though Casio India has a majority position in the calculators market, growth in the segment has remained sluggish.
Company is looking at segmenting the calculator market and offer diverse products such as scientific and graphic calculators meant for specific purposes.
The company is looking to promote its calculators by tying up with schools, offering free calculators and setting up special mathematics labs in an attempt to boost a sagging market.
Casio also plans to open exclusive boutiques to offer more visibility for its entire range of products.
Casio India has to have about seven to eight exclusive Casio outlets nationwide by the end of the year.
Competing with the grey market
In order to motivate consumers to buy its products from its dealers and outlets instead of the grey market, Casio has decided to take a hit on its margins and instead sell products at prices comparable to smuggled Casio products sold in the country.
It will provide range, variety and will try and make our prices just as competitive. Company will have to drastically reduce its margins for this.
Casio is prepared to bite the bullet to enhance its India presence. |
